Listen: Episode 27: Skills for Feats

Main Topic: Unearthed Arcana: Feats for Skills

In this episode we cover the Wizards of the Coasts Dungeons and Dragons Unearthed Arcana: Feats for Skills. WotC created one new feat for each of the 18 skills in D&D5e. The material in UA is presented for playtesting and spark your imagination. We love these as they take the focus away from combat feats and help the characters improve their characters for the two other pillars of D&D; exploration, and social interactions.

Unearthed Tips and Tricks: New and reusable D&D content for you to bring with you on your next adventure.

Character Concept: The Big Show!

Much like a pro wrestler, this character goes way over the top when describing the beat down he is going to give the enemy.

Constantly boasting of his greatness

Always flexing his muscles

Randomly pops into strongman poses

Occasionally while intimidating the enemy, he rips off his shirt

Monster Variant: Frostborn Zombie

Origin: Zombie

Features:

Ice Armor: Body is covered in ice armor, +4 AC- If attacked with a fire based spell of first level or higher reduce the AC by 1 for each attack to a max of -4.

Icey Step: The creature has a 5 foot aura that causes ice to form on the terrain around it. Any creature who enters the aura makes a dex saving throw DC 13 or fall prone.

Icey Touch: All attacks are cold damage in addition to their other types.

Encounter: Demon Door

Encounter: The players encounter a large stone door. On the door is a large face, and above it read the words “speak ____ and enter.” When the players approach the door, the door greets them and converses like any normal NPC. The players can say the password all they want, but for some strange reason the door just won’t budge. The trick here is that the door needs to say the phrase, not the players.

Magic Item: Ghost Armor

Feature: This armor has an illusion effect cast upon it, rendering it invisible. Your enemy does not know you’re wearing armor, thus is careless with their strikes. When the first attack is made against you in combat, you gain a +2 bonus to AC. This effect only works if the enemy is unaware you are wearing armor and can only be used once per encounter.

Dungeon Master Tip:

Give your NPCs feats! Feats are a powerful way to make your NPC stand out. For example, simply giving common farmers the polemaster feat, or charge feat instantly makes them stand out to the group. This also helps when a village is so small they don't have a standing military presence. Giving them different feats allows them to have the "militia" feel, and still pull a bit of weight in combat.

Player Tip: Don’t be a dick

Remember roleplaying is Action

Show, don’t tell when it comes to your character

Deeds speak louder than words

Don’t just write “Brave” in the margin somewhere, display your bravery leap out to take on tough challenges.

You will know your successful when others describe your character as well as you do.
