Where Are All the New D&D Subclasses? A 2024-Era Player Options Guide

So you came back to D&D after a year away, you open the character builder, and suddenly your old subclass is gone, your favorite paladin oath lives in a book from 2014, and somebody at the table is playing a cartographer who teleports people around with a magic map. What the hell happened while you were gone?

Here is the short version. The 2024 Player's Handbook shipped with 48 subclasses, four for each of the twelve classes. Since then, five more books and one subscription Drop have piled on 29 more, and a World of Warcraft crossover book lands November 17 with nine more. Nobody put them in one place for you. Until now.

The dated index: every official 2024-era subclass source

Player’s Handbook (2024)

Out now. 48 subclasses, four per class, twelve classes. This is the baseline.

Eberron: Forge of the Artificer

Digital Nov 25, 2025; print Dec 9, 2025 (delayed from Aug 19 by a printing defect). The revised Artificer class plus five subclasses: Alchemist, Armorer, Artillerist, Battle Smith (all revised from Tasha's), and the brand-new Cartographer.

Forgotten Realms: Heroes of Faerun

Out now, November 2025. Eight subclasses: College of the Moon (Bard), Knowledge Domain (Cleric), Banneret (Fighter), Oath of the Noble Genies (Paladin), Winter Walker (Ranger), Scion of the Three (Rogue), Spellfire Sorcery (Sorcerer), Bladesinger (Wizard). Three are revised classics, five are brand new.

Ravenloft: The Horrors Within

Out now, June 16, 2026 (D&D Beyond subscribers got it early, June 2 for Master Tier, June 9 for Hero Tier). Seven horror subclasses: Reanimator (Artificer) and Hollow Warden (Ranger) are brand new; College of Spirits (Bard), Grave Domain (Cleric), Phantom (Rogue), Shadow Sorcery (Sorcerer), and Undead Patron (Warlock) are revised. The Hexblade did not make the cut.

Arcana Unleashed

Out now, September 15, 2026 (Master Tier Sept 1, Hero Tier Sept 8). Eight subclasses: Arcana Domain (Cleric), Arcane Archer (Fighter), Warrior of the Mystic Arts (Monk), Vestige Patron (Warlock), and four wizard schools, Conjurer, Enchanter, Necromancer, and Transmuter. Two are brand new, six are revised.

D&D Beyond Drop: Shadowfell Secrets

October 2026. One subclass: the Sorrow Knight (Fighter). This one is digital-only and subscription-only, available to Hero and Master Tier subscribers, and it stays in your library as long as you stay subscribed.

D&D: World of Warcraft

General release November 17, 2026 (early access November 3 for Master Tier). Nine subclasses: six new (Oath of the Ebon Blade and Oath of the Holy for Paladin, Demon Hunter for Ranger, Discipline and Shadow Domains for Cleric, Path of the Elements for Barbarian) and three updated (Swashbuckler Rogue, Path of the Spiritual Guardian Barbarian, Warrior of Mystic Brews Monk).

Add it up and you get 76 subclasses in print across five books, plus the Sorrow Knight from the Drop, with nine more arriving November 17. That takes the book total to 85 by the end of 2026. Druids are the only class still sitting at four options. Clerics and wizards lead the pack with nine each once the WoW book lands.

Three things that trip returning players up

First, your 2014 subclass probably still works. Wizards of the Coast built the 2024 rules to be backwards compatible, and the official line is that older subclasses stay usable with your DM's approval. They just were not reprinted. So if your table is fine with it, your old character is not dead. It is just living in an older book.

Second, the Oathbreaker has not been updated. This is the exact question that kicked this whole thing off in the weekly questions thread. The Oathbreaker still lives only in the 2014 Dungeon Master’s Guide, and it is written as a villain option that needs your DM’s say-so. A revised Oathbreaker showed up in a November 2025 Unearthed Arcana playtest, but a playtest is not a book. Do not build a campaign around it until it actually prints.

Third, the new stuff is scattered on purpose. The Artificer only exists in the Eberron book. The horror subclasses only exist in the Ravenloft book. The wizard schools you lost in the 2024 Player’s Handbook only came back in Arcana Unleashed. And the Sorrow Knight does not exist in any book at all… it is a monthly subscriber perk. If you are hunting for one specific subclass, check the table above first and save yourself an hour of searching.

How to actually pick one

Stop scrolling lists and start with the fantasy. Do you want to be the bard who weaponizes ghost stories? That is College of Spirits, Ravenloft book. Do you want to be a paladin sworn to a genie? Oath of the Noble Genies, Heroes of Faerun. Do you want to punch people while casting spells? Warrior of the Mystic Arts, Arcana Unleashed. The subclass is the character concept wearing mechanics. Pick the concept, then find the book, then check with your DM that the book is allowed at the table. That order saves arguments.

And if the official list still does not have the weirdo you want to play, third-party books exist for exactly that reason. Crit Academy’s own Aelx’s Bombastic Oddities carries three subclasses you will not find in any Wizards book: the Strong-Arm Fighter, the Way of Endless Art Monk, and the Oath of Intercession Paladin, alongside 300 plus random oddities, a full pantheon, and a playable Eyoto race. New subclasses also mean new feat decisions at level 4, 8, 12, 16, and 19. If you want more feat options to pair with a fresh subclass, Crit Academy’s Fantastic Feats packs 55 plus new feats across racial, class, combat, magic, skill, and utility categories.

The one-line version to stick on your character sheet

The 2024 Player’s Handbook is the floor, not the ceiling. Five books, one subscription Drop, and a November 17 crossover later, there are 85 official 2024-era subclasses in print, and your old 2014 favorites still work if your DM says yes. Now go pick something weird.
